About Us

Better Hearing Australia has a long and proud history. The first meetings were held in Victoria in 1932 (The Victorian Lipreaders Club) and later in Sydney in 1935 so the organisation has been helping the hearing impaired for over eighty years.

Better Hearing Australia Canberra Inc assists people with a hearing loss in the ACT with information, education and support.

The Canberra Branch of Better Hearing Australia uses trained volunteers to present an educational program of ‘Hearing Loss Management’ (popularly known as Lipreading) sessions on Tuesdays, afternoon and evenings (see separate button).

The Branch is very active in assisting the hearing impaired community in Canberra and has an enthusiastic band of volunteers and three BHA Aural Rehabilitation Teachers able to provide training and advice on hearing loss to people of
the ACT and surrounding community. Hearing Awareness Training for government and business forms part of our access program. Public speaking to raise the profile of Australia’s 3 million plus hearing impaired is also undertaken.

The BHA Canberra Committee consists of up to eight members with a chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. The Incorporated Association dates from 7 December, 2012 although a BHA Canberra Group has operated in Canberra as part of Sydney Branch since 1993. BHA Canberra Inc. is a Not for Profit Public Benevolent Institution and has been recognised as a charity by the Australian Charity and Not for Profit Commission. BHA Canberra is also a Deductable Gift Recipient. All of the Committee are members of BHA Canberra.
